Where and when did hot spots emerge?
Rates are Empirical Bayes smoothed reported cases or deaths per 100,000 residents (2021 population). Hot spots: Getis-Ord Gi* with false discovery rate control; emerging categories follow Esri's Emerging Hot Spot Analysis definitions (simplified). Counties with more reported cases than residents are hatched and left out of the rate statistics. Each death counted here was a person. Data: The New York Times, U.S. Census Bureau, USDA ERS.
